Global Warming’s Killer: Critical Thinking

July 10, 2012

June 18, 2012  by Russell Cook

Is there any issue more dependent on widespread lapses in critical thinking than the idea of man-caused global warming?

Nothing wrecks an argument faster than a question revealing a gaping hole in that argument’s fundamental premise.  Notice the abundantly obvious derailment in this example:

“We need to do something about the proliferation of ghosts causing an unprecedented number of people to have nightmares lately.  This problem leads to widespread sleeplessness, which in turn leads to a downturn in work productivity and overall economic hardship, and you are a cold-hearted capitalist pig if you deny the need for workers to be healthy.”

Any critical thinker will yell, “What?! Prove ghostsexistbefore you start calling me names!”

The so-called global warming crisis has gotten away with an equally preposterous premise — that human activity drives climate change —  for nearly two decades, because that premise at least sounded plausible.  After all, humans do damage the environment to some extent in various ways, and the weather does seem a bit weird lately, so maybe it’s possible that our greenhouse gas emissions have a detrimental effect.  Plus, reporters tell us that scientists are saying this is so.

Overlooked by many is the very thing that’s kept the issue alive all this time.  No different from in a ponzi scheme, the public must never lose confidence in the idea that this issue is a problem in need of a solution.  The moment anything approaching a majority of people starts asking tough questions about skeptic scientists expressing legitimate opposition, the entire issue goes into a fatal tailspin, taking down all those who unquestioningly defend the idea.

Think about all the assertions we’ve heard and what happens when anybody starts asking critical questions using information that’s easier than ever to find on the internet.

Even at the height of winter in the northern hemisphere, we’re told the Arctic ice cap is melting and that polar bears drown when swimming through too much open water.  Yet polar bear populations are increasing, online Arctic weather station feeds closest to the ice cap routinely show freezing temps in all but the warmest summer months, and this particular winter, Arctic Sea Ice Extent has returned to levels very close to the 1979-2000 average.

The media has been implying that extreme weather is more frequent, yet blaring headlines from long ago are easily found on weather appearing to be just as extreme, if not worse.

We’re told that the dry warm winter in the U.S. this time around indicates global warming, yet horrible cold temperatures in Europe this same winter aren’t called a similar indicator.

Many express anguish over ocean acidification, yet these same people never mention the irrefutable fact that oceans are alkaline and that it would thus take some kind of herculean phenomenon just to push them into a pure neutral pH balance, long before they ever become even mildly acidic.

Prominent NASA personnel who criticized NASA’s alarmist narratives on global warming in a recent WSJ letter are said to be politically driven, yet NASA climate scientist James Hansen is routinely seen being arrested at civil disobedience global warming rallies organized by far-left enviro-activists.

The chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change said that “everything that we look at and take into account in our assessments has to carry credibility of peer-reviewed publications, we don’t settle for anything less.”  Yet people who meticulously sift through IPCC reports are finding out that in its 2007 report alone, over 5,500 such publications were non-peer-reviewed.

And on and on.  Critical thinking is eventually deadly to the idea of man-caused global warming.  It’s a death by a thousand cuts.

But there is one more especially egregious lapse in critical thinking here — not regarding the science, but instead vis-à-vis what the public is led to believe about skeptic scientists.

We’re told that skeptic scientists lie about all of the “death by a thousand cuts” evidence.  We’re told that they work for big coal and oil — much like so-called expert shills were paid by tobacco industries to “manufacture doubt” about the hazards of smoking.

Yet no reporter pushing that narrative bothers to show which peer-reviewed science journal-published paper written by a skeptic is an outright fabrication written in exchange for fossil fuel industry money.  No reporter bothers to show how myriad examples of critical thinking reveal pre-existing — not manufactured — doubt about claims of evidence for global warming.  And no reporter ever attempts to first disprove that the paltry funding skeptics did receive from the fossil fuel industry was given simply because those people agreed with what the skeptics were already saying.

The accusation that skeptic scientists are corrupt is devoid of critical thinking.  Anybody will spot these problems after a thorough examination of all the facts:

Al Gore says that book author/reporter Ross Gelbspan discovered leaked evidence from 1991 coal industry memos proving that skeptics are corrupt, yet other book authors and reporters quoted words from those memos prior to Gelbspan, including Gore himself.

Uncounted numbers of people quote words from those memos to prove that skeptics are corrupt, yet not one ever shows the memos in their full context.

Gelbspan claimed in a late summer 1997 NPR radio interview, using the most commonly quoted fragment sentences from the memos, that “sinister” efforts were being made to confuse the public about global warming, yet when the full-context memos are read at Greenpeace archive scan web pages (where only an astute researcher would know to look for them; they are not found there via ordinary internet searches), it becomes abundantly obvious that the memos were for a very small pilot project PR campaign, and Gelbspan took the fragment sentences entirely out of context.

Gelbspan was long praised as a Pulitzer-winner, the designation even appearing on the front of his hardcover 2004 Boiling Point book, yet the Pulitzer organization has never recognized him as a prize-winner.

On and on and on, there is a sea of red flags to be found in the accusation itself and all the people surrounding it.

Tie the full exposure of the global warming issue’s ever-increasing science problems with the revelation of how a literally unsupportable accusation bordering on libel/slander was concocted against its scientist critics, and the world should now see how all the hysteria was and is nothing more than an “information” Ponzi scheme based on constant infusions of misinformation that could have been revealed as such years ago.  A death of a thousand cuts becomes a stake through the heart.

Look at all the original research being published here by anonymous geniuses. Oh wait. Dunning Kruger syndrome children is what I meant. Meanwhile, every single national science academy on earth disagrees with the ill informed functionally illiterate writer. The one without legitimate credentials.

Russell Cook

And remember, folks, commenter “Mark Schaffer” here offers the very best form of criticism available from the side pushing man-caused global warming. Appeals to authority and unsupportable ad hominem attacks.

As I’ve said many times in other comments, it’s simply astounding how oblivious the Al Gore side is to the sheer ineffectiveness of this tactic, yet they continue to rely solely on it. You can almost hear a growing chorus of voices spreading around the world saying in one form or another, “Is that the best you can do?”

Every day, there’s miraculous warming that subsides at night. Every summer, the warming is more sustained, a difference that can be 80 degrees F or greater from winter. Even environmental wackos admit this is the effect of the sun. But suddenly, when the talk is of half a degree or less of claimed warming, it can’t be the Sun. No, THAT is all the doing of Man and cow farts.

The problem the Warmists have gotten themselves into is that in order to get people’s attention you have to make their catastrophe immanent. However the behemoth bureaucratic governments that they have created cannot react to the crisis before their deadline has come and gone with no effect. Twenty years ago Ted Danson said the oceans would be dead in ten years. How many times have we reached the point of no return on climate change? Yes the climate is changing, VERY SLOWLY. Slowly enough for all life on the planet to adapt right along with it, or go extinct. Of course science also tells us that there are more species that have been extinct since before man than there are in existence right now. We didn’t do that! Extinction happens; just don’t let it happen to you.

NickSJ Global warming theory is supported by models that predicted above normal future temperature increases. Unfortunately for the warmers, there has been NO global temperature increase for the past 15 years, thus invalidating the models and the theory upon which they are based. So much for “settled science.”

The warmers have managed to demonize CO2 in the minds of many regardless of its effect on warming. We should never lose an opportunity to point out that CO2 is an essential gas, just as essential as oxygen. All the carbon in all living things comes originally from CO2. There is only one CO2 molecule for every 3,000 molecules of atmosphere, and one CO2 molecule for every 600 molecules of oxygen. Even after a large percentage increase in CO2, it would still be a tiny trace gas.

We here in Va Beech are still waiting for Alaska to melt since the Atlantic Ocean water level in the 12 years 6 Month .

The Ocean level is up .078 of One Inch . Naval Scientist there called Normal now checked for 121 years .

That is According to the Oceania Naval Observatory Three Miles from the Va Beech Shore line they measure daily .

Alaska just for the Record had the snowiest Winter 32.6 Ft and the Coldest Winter since 1904 .

Shell Oil announced three weeks ago they still can’t drill for Oil in Northern Alaska because of larger than average Ice Bergs still unmelted now in mid June .

Ranger+Joe

Alaska just had one of her coldest winters on record. They’re probably still digging out. I’m sure people died in remote areas. The Bering Sea froze solid and many coastal towns were stranded. However…this is Sarah Palin’s state so none of this is relevant to the propaganda narrative.

Even a modicum of critical thinking posed by this very simple question should give people pause:

“If scientists armed with the best data collection techniques and computer systems can’t predict the local weather with any accuracy more than 3 days in advance, what makes you think these same scientists can predict the weather 50 or one hundred years from now?”

Of course our educational system has dumbed down a generation or two to the point where they have no concept of thinking critically. Limbaugh puts it beatifully when he says (paraphrasing) “we need a fact informed public and instead we have an emotionally shaped public”

My favorite quote relating to all of the crises mentioned:

“The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.” HL Mencken

Paul+from+SA

They know. They know it takes only a short presentation of facts and questions to turn most people away from believing in man-made global warming. That’s why they try so hard to suppress any contrary information from getting out, and try so hard to discredit anybody who might be heard, and why they won’t participate in a public debate.

I keep asking: how can they prove climate change is not natural?

Fearless+Bear

Ladies and Gentlemen, the nonsensical hypothesis that man made CO2 emissions have changed and will increasingly change the climate to make it warmer has been shown to be dubious at best, and dead wrong in all likelihood. But if you are looking for a silver bullet to utterly deflate the warmist/Gaia freak ballon, I would suggest you simply understand that the temperature records over the centuries, and even the past century, are all subject to a small but real amount of instrumental and measurement method uncertainty. When that inherent uncertainty is accounted for, there is no proof of warming. This is because the alleged warming is smaller than the uncertainty range. As a smart physicist has put it: “This ±0.46 C reveals that the global surface air temperature anomaly trend from 1880 through 2000 is statistically indistinguishable from 0 C, and represents a lower limit of calibration uncertainty for climate models and for any prospective physically justifiable proxy reconstruction of paleo-temperature. The rate and magnitude of 20th century warming are thus unknowable, and suggestions of an unprecedented trend in 20th century global air temperature are unsustainable.” The larger source reference is here: http://wattsupwiththat (dot) com/2011/01/20/surface-temperature-uncertainty-quantified/

The title of a Shakespeare comedy, Much Ado About Nothing, fits our current situation, in which junk science is touted by statist government and environmentalist control freaks because it is convenient to their agendas to tout it. These people should know by now that they are misleading the public, but they persist. The country and the world could save hundreds of billions of dollars virtually overnight if we would stop playing pretend about CO2, since the pretend game hikes energy costs, discourages fossil energy investment, drives food and other product prices up, and is keeping jobs from being created in the private sector.

Drew

Yes, the alarmists should be stopped on the first hill of their false construct man made global warming – no significant warming on a global level established. Back in other geological ages when the earth WAS actually much warmer, it obviously had nothing to do with Man or his carbon emissions. Talk about stampeding sheep with loud noises – that’s all the Left has, no evidence that withstands scrutiny.

Fredx   “After all, humans do damage the environment to some extent in various ways, and the weather does seem a bit weird lately, so maybe it’s possible that our greenhouse gas emissions have a detrimental effect.”

So here we go, right out of the gate in paragraph #5, giving the store away, thus castrating your article even before presenting your arguments. I don’t know why so many writers are so apologetic about this subject. There is no need to concede one inch to the other side, particularly when your “critical thinking” includes such precise phrases as “to some extent in various ways,” “a bit weird lately,” and “so maybe it’s possible.” You may as well go ahead and defect to the other side, where they will welcome your vagaries with open arms.

Agreed.   What part of “fraud, lies, and deceit” doesn’t the author understand? He has obviously drank the Liberal Kool Aid, and the outlook for undoing the brainwashing is not good. I shall read Mr Cook’s articles with a grain of salt from now on.

“What’s this?” thought Barack Obama. “I can feel nothing warmer at all! That is terrible. Am I stupid? Am I a flat-earther? Am I a denier? Am I not fit to be President? That would be the most dreadful thing that could happen to me. “Oh, it is very hot!” Obama said aloud. “It has my highest approbation.” And Obama nodded in a contented way, and gazed outside, for he would not say that he felt no Global Warming. The whole entourage that he had with him tried and tried but felt no warming, any more than the rest; but, like Barack Obama they said, “It is so hot!” and Rahm Emanuel counseled him to always say that he felt hot when he was out in public, even hotter than all the Eric Holder troubles were making them both feel. “It is warm, hot even!” went from mouth to mouth. On all sides there seemed to be general warming, and Barack Obama gave Al Gore the title of Imperial Master of Global Warming Science.

So Barack Obama went in procession, and every one in the streets said, “How incomparable hot it is! What a hot day it is!” No one would let it be perceived that he could not feel warming, for that would have shown that he was not fit for his office, or was very dumb or a flat-earther or a denier. No day of Barack Obama’s had ever been as hot as this one.

“But I’m freezing my rear off out here!!!” a little child cried out at last. “Just hear what that innocent says!” said the father: and one whispered to another what the child had said. “But it is cold out here!” said the whole people at length. That touched Barack Obama, for it seemed to him that they were right; but the thought within himself was, “I must go through with feeling all the Global Warming. I do not dare to do otherwise” And so he held himself a little higher, which was very difficult for him to do with all the bowing to dictators that he has been doing, and his aides held on tighter than ever, and proclaimed the Global Warming which did not exist at all.

Caroline The Infidel

But that non-compliant child was heard by a menacing shadow in the procession. Those words produced the smallest beads of brine-ish moisture which exuded from his sallow temple. Doubt, however small, could not exist amongst the herd…it must be destroyed. Soon, working in concert with famous couturiers and anonymous sweat shops across Asia, the layered look was in. So many layers. Sweaters upon sweaters, thigh-high crew socks, beanies (preferably found in the street and infested with hair lice), gloves with fingers removed, Doc Marten shin boots, oversized parkas….all to be worn all thru the year, day and night, winter and summer. “Yes, it does seem hotter,” said the skatepunks and gangbangers and eco-friendly google complex types as they cursed the imperialist United States for their malodorous perspiration and salt-stung eyes and general heat fatigue.

But the doubt somehow remained, for the females who had been encouraged to be generous with “free services” were finding it harder to sell their wares with the encumbering fashions….they began to shed their layers and wondered why the males were forever complaining of debilitating heat and unable to partake in age old commerce. The feminists saw opportunity and joined the chorus….”Males are insane, lethargic, smelly and unfit to lead!!!!!” However, the feminists did not realize they had strayed from the dogma in their heated (internally generated as opposed to pigcapitalist generated) pursuit of power….much to their peril. For that menacing shadow calling the shots would never falter in his quest. If he must, he must….and joined the ranks with the those seeking the 12th Imam. For only in this way would woman be forced to don such garb as to make them believers in the heat. And so it passed, the bond was made and Islam would have free reign upon the land, thus ensuring suffocating heat until the smiting of necks and stonings of bodies would blessedly release all from the oppression of heat.

…the public must never lose confidence in the idea that this issue is a problem in need of a solution.

Well said, Mr. Cook!

Fake crises and imaginary enemies obscure real problems in the minds of the gullible. The real problem is rapidly deepening government intrusion into our daily lives and the concurrent soaring costs of government. The fake problem, so-called “anthropogenic global warming,” not only hides the real problem in a fog of anxiety, but serves as an excuse for still more government intrusion. We “climate deniers,” like Holocaust deniers, are proclaimed enemies; it’s even been proposed we need government-funded psychological and social reeducation.

Three thoughts:

1.) Stalin didn’t need an elaborate theory to excuse shooting, hanging, and starving millions of kulaks to death. He needed an excuse for communist agricultural failures, chose a group of victims to blame, and sent out death squads.

2.) The AGW pseudo-science, like the so-called “long form Hawaiian birth certificate,” was poorly crafted and readily exposed as fakery. The people who claim to be our moral and intellectual superiors often do sloppy work.

3.) The next pseudo-scientific crisis that necessitates immediate, massive government intervention will probably be better crafted and backed up by less accessible fake evidence.

Environmentalism is unhealthy for the planet

Ethel C. Fenig

Environmentalism, and its adherents the environmentalists, otherwise known as greenies, is harmful to the climate and other living things. The road to a polluted hell–and earth–is paved with environmentalists’ good intentions. The New York Times provides another example as it reports that thanks to a UN carbon credits inititative

Profits on Carbon Credits Drive Output of a Harmful Gas

When the United Nations wanted to help slow climate change, it established what seemed a sensible system.

Greenhouse gases were rated based on their power to warm the atmosphere. The more dangerous the gas, the more that manufacturers in developing nations would be compensated as they reduced their emissions.

But where the United Nations envisioned environmental reform, some manufacturers of gases used in air-conditioning and refrigeration saw a lucrative business opportunity.

They quickly figured out that they could earn one carbon credit by eliminating one ton of carbon dioxide, but could earn more than 11,000 credits by simply destroying a ton of an obscure waste gas normally released in the manufacturing of a widely used coolant gas. That is because that byproduct has a huge global warming effect. The credits could be sold on international markets, earning tens of millions of dollars a year.

That incentive has driven plants in the developing world not only to increase production of the coolant gas but also to keep it high – a huge problem because the coolant itself contributes to global warming and depletes the ozone layer. (snip)

So since 2005 the 19 plants receiving the waste gas payments have profited handsomely from an unlikely business: churning out more harmful coolant gas so they can be paid to destroy its waste byproduct. (snip) That means, critics say, that United Nations subsidies intended to improve the environment are instead creating their own damage.

Oh sure, now the European Union and the UN are working to reduce carbon subsidy credits. But most of the beneficiaries of the carbon credit scam, er, healthy, clean air initiative are in the so called Third World countries of China and India. If they stop the credits these poor countries will suffer. In other words the EU and the UN will then be practicing–racism! As bloggers everywhere say, “Heh!”

Fearless+Bear Collapse

The hypothesis of manmade global warming due to carbon dioxide emissions has been shown by peer reviewed science to be a ridiculous overstatement and based in overwhelming part on number fudging. Government agencies like NOAA and NASA have published doctored data on temperatures, while scientists on the governmental dole here and elsewhere have lied, distorted and suppressed information. The climate predictions are based on modeling that is incapable of reliable prediction and has repeatedly shown to be wrong, yet we are paying billions to institutions to produce these predictions. Where an honest government would welcome the discovery of this fraud, because it makes life simpler and less expensive, our Progressive leaders have bought into it as a means to control energy use, and thereby have their hands on the means of production. Together with the notions that Barack Obama is just an earnest politician and not a dedicated socialist, and that Islam is really a peaceful institution, this is one of the three great lies affecting the world today.

derfel+cadarn

For most of its practitioners Liberalism is a mental illness but for the large portion of its leaders it is cover for theft and extortion on a global scale. One needs only follow the money,at least in America the money is the only green in environmentalism.
